It's a map of my Last.fm friends' musical tastes/listening habits relative to my own. Height/color reflects a user's similarity to me. I'm not sure what dictates the spacial arrangement, but the points appear to be grouped by similarity to each other, so I'm guessing it's self-optimized to display the distinct groupings, rather than reflecting an X/Y coordinate system.

ETA: Okay, I was almost right. According to the explanation on the site: "Height of the people in Sociomap stands for the average music compatibility with others. People on the top have the similar music taste with most people in this group. Position represents the music similarity. The closer the two people are together, the more similar music taste they have."

I still don't seem to show up on anyone's page as having and similar tastes except Wolfsheim. Go figure that it's the style of music I listen to least that dictates my matches.

The accuracy will improve considerably once you have more than a few hundred listens under your belt. Wolfsheim just happens to be heavily represented in your lineup right now. Go figure that you and I would match on a band I don't think I've listened to even once in the last five years.

Oh, I know. I had a last.fm account awhile back, but my files were in such disarray that it was almost embarrasing, so I stopped using it. I'm anal about tagging everything properly these days, so I expect I'll actually get something out of it this time.

I hadn't pulled out Wolfsheim in a long time, but [info]choralone23 recently gave them a shot and really liked them, so I played through some of it. A lot of it still holds up remarkably well, but it's tough to sort of step back. My tastes have broadened and changed considerably since I was a teenager.
