Sad as I am to see it show up, it had to happen one day. In fact, wasn't there a website for a supposedly "in production" Neuromancer movie that popped up several years ago?

I'm sure one studio or another has owned the rights for years. And I'd love to see Neuromancer turned into a movie at the competent hands of, say, a Danny Boyle or a Spike Jonze — Gibson's worlds are so richly described that they almost beg for cinematic treatment, though I suspect some of his stories are effectively unfilmable. (Not SFX-wise, but because some of them are just too...static...to survive translation to the dynamic world of cinema intact.)

Sadly, it seems almost destined never to happen with any of his works: the closest I've seen anyone come to authentic Gibson on screen was New Rose Hotel, and for various reasons — including, I think, the subject of my parenthetical musing above — it was almost a complete failure as a film.

This actually looks somewhat promising (in that Peter Weir has considerable directorial chops — hard to judge from the cast, yet). Sadly, it's entirely too easy to see it going the way of New Rose Hotel — that one looked good on paper, too.

And, according to an entry in Gibson's blog from last year, this one's dead in the water anyway.

That about sums it up. I saw New Rose Hotel years ago and it was pretty bland. Better than Johnny Mnemonic, but that's not saying much.

Hayden Christensen?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Well, at least Uwe Boll isn't involved. That's something. Maybe he'll just make a movie based on the game based on the movie based on the book.

As much as I'd love to lay that at the feet of Hayden Christenson, there are so many who deserve that blame so much more fully — beginning with George Lucas not knowing when to leave well enough alone. The original trilogy was beginning to wear pretty thin as it was.

George Lucas is dead to me.

Putting the twerp in at the end with Yoda and Obi-wan sealed the deal.

Seriously, what is it about William Gibson film properties that attracts the attentions of no-talent child actors and even more talentless music video directors?

Yeah, and judging from that and the rest of his filmography, we're not exactly talking Spike Jonze, here. (Who, now I think of it, if anyone could pull off Neuromancer, might be somewhere on the short list.)

my short list includes:

chirstopher nolan (think: memento)
david cronenberg (think: videodrome, existenz)
ridley scott (think: bladerunner)
brad anderson (think: session 9, the machinist)

someone like david lynch, but not so...lynch-y.

that's a short list. i need to see more films.

and charlie kaufman adapts.

I think Danny Boyle pretty much tops my list, as mentioned above. (Imagine Neuromancer filtered through a pastiche of Trainspotting, 28 Days Later and Sunshine.)

I cast my vote for Nimrod Antal. Kontroll might be set in the present, but the whole film damn near feels like it's set in the Sprawl.

Unrelated:
You just got a new issue of "The Beast" in the mail.
Normally, I wouldn't make a special point of mentioning it... I'd just collect your mail and give it to you next time I saw you, but this time I noticed that it included an article on why Republicans should vote for Ron Paul. Color me shocked.
Anyhow... it's here.
Happy Valentine's Day!
